{Big} City Girl QAL - Week 1 Berlin meets Istanbul

I am so excited that the QAL starts today :)

We will sew blocks about cities and places you live or you visited already or always dreamed of. This could be a great memory for you or a wonderful gift for someone special. It is up to you to make only one block or a complete quilt, follow our pattern or make your own and share it with us. At the end we will have a great kind of library of unique city-blocks all over the world.

You can share your WIP´s and blocks in this flickr group.

We will start with Berlin and Istanbul, but first I would love to introduce you to all the fantastic quilters and their dates sharing their city-blocks with you.

Now back to the blocks of the week!

Berlin

Well, I think it is obvious why I have chosen Berlin, if you know me a bit. I loooove my home town, it is the best city on the world ;-). You could make a touristic commercial with me about my city. Even I was working in another part of Germany when I became pregnant, it was clear, that I had to be back in Berlin for birth, so my daughter is a real Berliner too, not only Kennedy ;-).

And this is what I came up with: The Brandenburg Gate!

This is a great sight of our city and a magnet for tourists as well as for natives. A place where you will find open air concerts, jump-meetings, fashion walks as well as speeches of important or well known politicians and public viewings of football  games. It is a place of history being part of the border between former East- and West-Berlin. When I was a young women the Gate was behind the wall in the east part of Berlin!
So I thought this is a great place to make a pattern of.

And so I made my very first paper-piecing-pattern. Hope you enjoy sewing it. Here you can see this block in different fabrics. Thanks to fortifiedbeaver, floh.stiche and Andrea@Quiltmanufaktur for testing my pattern in different stages ;-).

I would say this is an intermediate pattern and if you leave the triangels D2/D3 and D5/D6 away and make it as rectangles and leave part E and F completely and the backfabric on D and apllique the stylized horses and quadriga, you could also make it for beginners in paper piecing.

I am so curious, how your blocks will look.

Istanbul

This is the second most beautiful city of the world  for me. Ok, maybe the most, because it has the sea. Some say it is loud and dirty and too busy, but as I am used to go there often during my whole life I don´t see those points. I love the way the city is like a antsiness. You see tradition and modern so close to each other. So many historical sight meeting  young and modern art. This is a really great place you should have seen once in your life!!! Take the ship to cross the Bosporos, the huge sea gate betwen Europe and Asia and have a look over the city from the water. You get the most beautiful sunrises there and so I had the idea to make an  aplique block where you get no real pattern for me. I just show you the steps I made to inspire you to make it with your city.

Pick a foto with a sunset of your city and enlarge it as big as your block shall be. Copy this a couple of times. The cut off the single contours. Choose your fabrics and be bolder than me ;-). Create your background - I made improved curves. Place your contours the furthest away first and the closest last. Then take your papter pattern and draw them on light fusible interface and iron it on the fabric, cut it out with enough seam allowence and glue or iron the seam. Now you can sew it on the background - with hand or machine. You can also cut it our without seam and make it with raw edges.

Maybe the next time I would try some needle turn aplique for it or without folding seams with a zig zag on top of it. But in every case I would take a light fusible interface, because it is much easier to aplique in any way.

I hope you enjoyed the idea of making sity block so stay tuned with {Big} City Girl QAL. Thanks for reading and maybe joining us!

  1. I just had to come over from Amy's blog to see your photos. I am so impressed! Beautiful photos and the blocks are stunning. I think the examples of your Berlin block with plain backgrounds show how the right background makes a block go from good to awesome. The text fabric does that for yours. Wonderful.

  8. Oha! Genial, kann ich nur sagen. In Berlin war ich sogar schon mal. Ich meine, das Tor war weihnachtlich geschmückt. Adventskalender? Ist schon ewig her.
Meine Stadt? Ich könnte was mit Hamburg machen (ist ja in der relativen Nähe) oder aber was mit schwedischen Häusern. Da war ich schon oft und gerne. Nur wann... Reizen tut's mich ja, wie so vieles. ;)

  10. These are great blocks - I especially love the Brandenburger Tor. I have been to Germany many times but never to Berlin - it is on my list of places I must go to visit. Istanbul looks amazing too - a unique mix of East and West - another city on my list!
