Letters meet AMH Quilt

My last finished quilt wasn´t enough honored by me on my blog ;-). Ok, I posted pictures here and there, but I will dedicate this quilt an own post:

The Letters meet AMH Quilt for my daughter!
Der Letters meet AMH Quilt für meine Tochter!

I started with the idea of making this quilt, when Krista - Poppyprint started her Proverbial QAL with the letter pattern from Denyse Schmidt. Of copurse I could have made my own letters, but it was much easier to use a pattern and it is much more fun sewing in a QAL together with like minded people. So I bought this pattern which proposes to sew those letters with freezer paper. This is a technique which has not really taken me, so I decided to make it as paper piecing and printed those pattern and draw the lines on the other side at the window ;-) to get them mirrored - my printer isn´t able to do this by it self.

I knew which text I would write the very first Moment. And I knew what fabrics I wanted to use. colorful happy letters on low volumes for the one side and Anna Maria Horner flannels for the back. So I started to look through the internet to find some flannels and bought some here and there, whereever I found some. Here is my first approach for the text:

Hier mein erster Textentwurf:

I wanted to write down the lullaby I sang (and sometimes sing still) to my daughter when she was younger - she is eleven now. It means something like: If you are tired my sweet little one, you can come to me and I will always cuddle you into sleep. I always added verses about what happended the day. And I wanted to add the sentence which is not really unique, but was/is our conversation about who is loving the other one more: I love you till the moon and back multiplicated with a Million. These were lots of letters. I started last August 2012 and wanted to make this a prensent to her in June, when Primary School finishes and she changes to gymnasium. But more to my hurry finishing this later ;-).

My first letters...

I was so inspired by the letters of the other members of the QAL and the quilt of Krista - Poppyprint which is one of my alltime favorites. It is a song from the Beatles, Black Bird, which was allowed to sing as a solo part with my sweet litte hobby choir. We sing once a year for our family and friends, so nothing big, but still very exciting for us as amateur singers. Isn´t this a wonderful quilt? I know, it is the second time I show her quilt on my still new blog, but I really love it so much!!!

Lots of projects come in between sewing letters and time was running, so I set myself a new deadline and wanted to finish the quilt for the beginning of the new School at the beginning of August. Unfortunately or maybe lucky my daughter saw my WIP pictures on my I-Pad. She waited a week, untill she asked my, if this quilt is for her. I was so afraid that she could think, she is no baby for a quilt with this text, but she loved the idea and was my coach, mentor and motivator since then. "Mama, can you finish this to bring it to London with us?" I was a bit shocked about this question - mid of July instead of beginning of August - but I work well under pressure, so I told her I will try my best. Sewing letter after letter I realized, that the text is much to long. So we skipped the last sentence. But still I was afraid it could not be enough space for the song without cutting words, but I manged it to put all the letters needed for the lullaby on this quilt, so the size is nothing standard, but it´s a big soft quilt now!

I am so glad, that I could make it just in time - I was really exhausted but the happiest person on the world - hm, ok, maybe the second one, because my daughter took the no. 1 place :)))))

We both love this quilt and I hope she will treasure it, even there will be times, it is not being on her bed or in her room. I hope she will pick it up from time to time to cuddle with it and think of me, where ever she will be later.

Hope you enjoyed my little story about this quilt. I wish you a great Weekend!
